We discussed the challenges and potential solutions in the field of language and communication, with a focus on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We emphasized the need for deep reflection and understanding of one's own privilege and biases, particularly as a white woman in a predominantly white field. We also highlighted the importance of trusting and amplifying the voices of people of color, and the need for ongoing training and conversation to address systemic issues. Lastly, we acknowledged the discomfort and guilt that can arise when confronting one's own privilege and the need to take action to create positive change.

We emphasized the importance of institutions being accountable for promoting social justice and cultural competency. We highlighted the significant influence academic programs have on shaping the profession and the need for these programs to become more equitable and inclusive. We also discussed the importance of forming partnerships and developing people to feel confident in engaging in interracial and intraracial partnerships. Furthermore, we shared experiences as SLPs and academic faculty member, which prepared me for program development by providing a deep connection to real-life experiences and understanding the outcomes students need. Lastly, we mentioned my efforts to diversify the student body in our graduate program, which had previously been predominantly white.
